Giles Whittell has a great piece in today’s Times about why he thinks Shakespeare is overrated. Whittell’s probably just having fun seeing how many huffy responses he can provoke from the magnates of the Arts lobby. The article itself wouldn’t be much sillier if it went on to argue that the Emperor Haile Selassie is alive, well and working as a bookie’s runner in Letchworth.
But he’s right about one thing:
If [Shakespeare] were alive today, he’d be a copywriter with a blog.
Giles, you’re my new hero.
