A fairytale of PR
BBC Radio 1 is busy whipping up a storm this Christmas by censoring the word ‘faggot’ from the Pogues song Fairytale of New York. Given that it’s a seasonal pop classic, this has caused a considerable - and predictable - fuss.
No, Mr. Angry of Croydon, it’s not ‘political correctness gone mad’. I’ll give you a pound to a penny it’s a ploy to boost listening figures over the Christmas season, ‘proving’ that the BBC really is enormously popular and, therefore, deserving of the high (and legally compulsory) Licence Fee.
Am I being paranoid? Maybe. But as I believe I may have suggested before, PR people are not above this kind of thing…
