Untangling the cables, upsetting the bad guys
| Untangle, Inc. is an innovative network security business based in
San Mateo, California. The company offers solutions to a range of commercial, educational
and medical clients, protecting them from viruses, spyware, spam and all the other nasties that keep network admins
awake at night.
The company gets its name from its products, which are simple to install and manage - 'untangling' the mess of boxes and cables that characterise much network security technology. Untangle has a very healthy approach to marketing: instead of making a lot of promises and leaving it at that, the team likes to demonstrate how existing customers have benefited from the product. I was commissioned to interview a number of Untangle clients and write a case study on each one. Everyone I talked to was very enthusiastic about Untangle and how it saved them hours of time every week. Enthusiasm is infectious, so I decided that as far as possible I would build the case studies around the interviewees' own words. Potential customers, I reasoned, would instinctively recognise and trust the tone and approach of specialists who did jobs like theirs.
